Start in Woodstock Illinois where "Groundhog Day" was filmed. Movie and car buffs will reminisce fondly when they see the famous cars at the Volo Auto Museum. Tour the magnificent Cuneo Mansion and Gardens featured in "My Best Friend's Wedding". See the sign at the El Rancho Motel, in "Planes, Trains & Automobiles". Take a drive on the Amstutz Hwy used in many films. Tour the Genesee Theatre, a restored 1920's movie palace. Dinner at Wildfire & Marriott Theatre offers an evening musical.

Day One: Woodstock, Illinois was the movie set for “Groundhog Day”. Take a walking tour of sites on the Historic Woodstock Square. Tour the Woodstock Opera House which became the Pennsylvania Hotel in the movie. Have lunch on the Square and then leisurely discover Woodstock’s charm. Is that Ned Ryerson, rounding the bend? Bing! Do you hear faint sounds of the Pennsylvania Polka? Woodstock celebrates its starring role every year with the Groundhog Days festival on February 2. Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter? Anytime of the year, you’ll want to relive this town over and over again!
Check into your hotel to relax—McHenry County has many full and limited-service national chain accommodations from which to choose. Enjoy a casual dinner at the Warsaw Inn or Port Edward. Take in a performance at the Woodstock Opera House or the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake. How about a private screening of the movie, “Groundhog Day” complete with popcorn and soda?
Day Two: Your movie adventure continues on... Movie & TV car buffs will reminisce fondly when they see the famous cars at the Volo Auto Museum. Batman, The Blues Brothers, Back to the Future cars and more will get your heart racing! Lunch at Wildfire Restaurant offers a 1940’s steakhouse atmosphere. Greta Garbo or Clark Gable could walk through the door at any moment...
Hopefully you RSVP’ed for your next stop and lucky for you, tuxedos are optional. Tucked into the Chicagoland suburbs is the magnificent Cuneo Mansion and Gardens, featured in “My Best Friend’s Wedding”. The spacious lawn and gardens set the scene for the revealing best friend kiss, the wedding reception and the winding drive which lit up as the newly married couple drove off to their honeymoon.
Did they ever get a song? Will Julia dance? Isn’t Rupert debonair?
Movies and popcorn go well together. Stop by The Popcorn Factory for a tasting of their latest flavors - Deep Dish Pizza or our favorite, White Cheddar.
Take a drive down the Amstutz Highway where Bill Murray tried to leave town before the snowstorm in “Groundhog Day”. Senior groups will love a tour of the Genesee Theatre, a restored movie palace which hosted Jack Benny movie premieres and Hollywood stars & starlets.
Relax in one of Lake County’s 60+hotels. End the day at the King’s Wharf Restaurant and Marriott Theatre for a dinner and theatre experience. Many of the theatre’s musicals have become or were based on beloved movies.
Create your own movie script, (we mean itinerary) with our help; there are always more locations to discover. Note: Vince Vaughn has been filming here lately! We’ll help you feel like a star, you know the Oscar statues are made in Chicago!!
